Mention clouds and the first thing that comes to mind are the fluffy white formations you see in the sky. Unlike my popular namesake, however, I don’t reside in the heavens, and I’m not related to the weather. My name is Claudius, which is short for cloud computing, and I’m here to make things easier for you.
You’re probably wondering how I got that name. My mom had other names in mind, but “cloud computing” comes from Amazon, which popularized the term in 2006. The funny thing is, I was actually born in 1977. During that time, engineers were looking for a symbol to show how one network connected to another or to the internet. They settled on a cloud. Cute, huh?
You don’t need an advanced degree to understand how I work. Basically, cloud computing refers to the use of networks of remote servers (usually accessed over the internet) to store, manage, and process data. I know that’s a mouthful, but this is good news for many small businesses since they no longer need a wealth of expertise or money to use numerous technologies.
My abilities have made me a celebrity of sorts. People say I’m one of the hottest things to happen in the IT industry, and many companies — from startups to global corporations — are excited about me.
Popularity of cloud computing
Forrester, one of the most influential research firms in the world, said that the total global public cloud market will hit $178 billion this year, up from $146 billion in 2017. It named public cloud platforms as the fastest growing segment that will generate $44 billion in 2018.
Fortunately, my popularity has not gone to my head or made me conscious about my figure. I admit that I’m no heavenly body, but you try holding thousands of files and users every day and see how you manage!
With the right cloud provider, organizations are in for a treat, since there’s no limit to what they can do. I can be your virtual office, allowing your business to connect to clients anytime, anywhere using your smartphone or tablet. Beyond mobility, there are plenty of other reasons people love me.
Cloud computing saves time and money
When I’m around, companies don’t have to break the bank to buy expensive hardware and software. Sometimes, they don’t even need to create their own IT department, pay for IT experts or system upgrades, or establish their own on-site data center. Moving to the cloud is a win-win situation, since you have the resources of your cloud services provider at your disposal. This helps you save time and money.
Cloud computing increases productivity
Aside from consuming electricity, data centers normally require a lot of work that can affect productivity. Why bother employees with this tiresome task when they probably have better things to do?
With the cloud, you can free workers from unnecessary tasks concerning data management, so they can concentrate on what’s important. In effect, employees can work better and faster, which is all that matters.
Cloud computing encourages collaboration
I have the power to give employees and clients access to the same files across different devices no matter where they are. This will come in handy if you are working on a project with other people. Work is no longer confined to the four corners of the office, making employees more flexible. They can serve customers at home or during the holidays as long as they have an internet connection.
Cloud computing is secure
Your secret’s safe with me because I can protect your important files, apps, and network from various online threats. You don’t even have to worry about hardware failure, computer crashes, or cybercriminals hacking into your system and stealing your precious data. All these can be avoided with the help of a reliable cloud services provider.
Lastly, you have access to automatic updates. Depending on your plan, your system will be updated regularly with the latest technology. How’s that for service?
These are just some of the reasons why you can’t go wrong with cloud computing. If I were you, I’d take advantage of this powerful tool as soon as possible. Make yours truly, Claudius, the small business cloud, work for you — it’s easy, fast, and fun.
