FBI Issues Alert: Aggressive “Interlock” Ransomware Has Already Hit Ohio

Picture walking into your office tomorrow and finding you can no longer access your files. Instead, you find a ransom note. This isn’t just a hypothetical nightmare. The FBI and CISA are now warning about this exact scenario in a new joint alert.

The alert focuses on a highly aggressive ransomware gang called Interlock. Critically, this group is already active right here in our backyard. For business owners in Canton and North Canton, this is an urgent wake-up call that requires immediate attention.

Who is Interlock and What is “Double-Extortion”?

First seen in late 2024, Interlock quickly gained notoriety by attacking businesses across North America. In fact, one of their high-profile attacks targeted a major healthcare system right here in Ohio, causing massive disruption. This local connection makes the threat feel much more immediate.

This group practices **”double-extortion,”** a devastating one-two punch against businesses:

  1. First, They Steal Your Data: Before you even know they are there, the attackers break into your network. They then quietly copy (exfiltrate) your most sensitive files, including client lists, financial records, and employee information.
  2. Then, They Encrypt Your Files: Only *after* securing your data do they deploy the ransomware. This action locks you out of your own systems, grinding your operations to a halt.

Finally, Interlock hits you with a ransom demand. They typically give you a short, high-pressure deadline of just four days. If you fail to pay, they don’t just keep your files locked; they also dump all your stolen, private data onto the dark web for anyone to see.

How They’re Tricking Your Employees

Interlock doesn’t just rely on complex technical flaws; instead, they skillfully target your people. Their main entry methods are deviously simple tricks that are designed to make employees click without thinking.

For instance, they use tactics like:

  • Fake Browser Updates: A pop-up that looks exactly like a legitimate Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge update can trick a user into “approving” the download of malware.
  • Malicious Websites: Attackers often compromise legitimate websites or create fake ones. These sites use “ClickFix” social engineering, asking you to “click here to verify you’re human,” which then runs a malicious script.
  • Cross-Platform Attacks: This group is especially dangerous because their tools can attack both Windows and Linux servers. Consequently, no part of your network is safe from their reach.

What You Must Do to Protect Your Business

You might think your business is too small to be a target. However, ransomware gangs *love* small businesses, often seeing them as easy targets with smaller security budgets. The FBI doesn’t issue these alerts lightly, and this is a clear signal to take action.

The FBI and CISA recommend you take these non-negotiable steps right now:

  1. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): This is the single most effective way to block attackers. You must turn on MFA for every account, especially email and VPN. If you don’t, you are dangerously exposed.
  2. Update and Patch Everything: Consistently keep your Windows, Linux, and all other software updated. Interlock exploits old, known flaws to get into your systems.
  3. Implement Web Filtering: A good firewall and web filter can block your employees from ever reaching the malicious sites where these fake updates live.
  4. Train Your Team: Ultimately, your employees are your first line of defense. You must train them to spot these fake updates and phishing attempts. This is exactly what Security Awareness Training is for.

While this might sound technical, acting now is infinitely less painful and less expensive than dealing with the aftermath of an attack. This is the moment to ensure your business doesn’t become Interlock’s next victim.
