This checklist is twelve straight questions covering backups, logins, patching, and training that show where your IT and security actually stand today. Read it right here, no form required, and use it to see what we'd look at first when we review your setup.
The Checklist
Twelve questions, straight through.
No email required to read it. Print it, save it, or send it to whoever handles IT for you.
Are your backups actually tested?
A backup nobody has restored from is a guess, not a safety net. Confirm your backups actually restore, not just that they run on schedule.
Is multi-factor authentication on every login?
A stolen password alone should never be enough to get into your email, your bank, or your file server. MFA is the single highest-return fix most businesses skip.
Are your computers actually getting patched?
A missed security update is an open door. Confirm every computer, not just some of them, is getting operating-system and software patches on a regular schedule.
Does every device run real endpoint protection?
Free antivirus alone was built for obvious junk, not a targeted attack. Confirm every computer and server runs real, monitored endpoint protection, not whatever came preinstalled.
Do your employees use a password manager?
Reused and written-down passwords are how one stolen login becomes many. A password manager gives every account its own strong password without anyone having to remember them.
Has your team had phishing training this year?
AI-built phishing pages are convincing enough that spotting them takes real practice, not a one-time memo. Confirm your team has been trained within the last twelve months.
Is your Wi-Fi separated for guests and staff?
A guest on your main network can see more than they should. Confirm guest Wi-Fi sits on its own separate network from the one your staff and servers use.
Do you know where your sensitive data lives?
You cannot protect what you cannot find. Confirm you know which systems hold client data, financial records, and anything else sensitive, and who can actually reach it.
Is there a written incident response plan?
Deciding who calls whom during an active breach is the worst time to figure it out. Confirm a simple written plan exists and your team has seen it.
Are old employee accounts actually disabled?
A former employee's still-active login is an open door nobody is watching. Confirm accounts are disabled the same day someone leaves, not weeks or months later.
Do you know your hardware's real age?
Aging hardware fails at the worst time and often cannot run current security software. Confirm you have a real list of your computers, servers, and their ages.
Does someone review your security alerts?
Security tools that nobody reviews catch problems only after the damage is done. Confirm someone is responsible for reviewing alerts from your computers, servers and email accounts, including after hours.
